Life Story: Mr. Soeun Da

Mr. Soeun Da, a resident of Pursat province, was identified and supported under the GBSP (Graduation Based Social Protection) programme.

He lost both legs above the knees due to a landmine explosion while working on his family’s farm. This life-changing injury not only impacted his physical mobility but also presented challenges to his intellectual and emotional development.

Despite these hardships, he and his family were determined to build a better future. Through GBSP’s support, they received a grant of $258, which they used to start a small-scale chicken-raising business. The idea was born out of both family needs and his strong desire to contribute meaningfully to his household.

Mr Soeun Da is sitting in an adapted wheelchair, his mother is standing next to him.

“He is committed, follows a daily routine, and feels proud to earn income for the family. For the first time, he truly recognizes his value within the household and the community.”

He actively participates in the business by creating homemade chicken feed using kitchen remaining food and vegetables grown around the house. This activity has given him a sense of purpose, structure, and responsibility. His mother, Mrs. Vong Sorn, shared that the business not only generates daily incomes, help to cover food and other basic expenses and also meets a real demand within the local community.

More importantly, the business has sparked new hope in Mr. Soeung Da. “He now has a dream” said Mrs. Vong Sorn. Mrs. Vong Sorn also emphasized that the GBSP project provided more than just financial support and it gave intellectual and emotional encouragement that transformed their family’s outlook.

Today, Mr. Soeun Da stands as a role model for disability inclusion in his community. He is proud to be a contributing member of his family and is a living example of how targeted support and inclusive opportunities can unlock the potential of individuals with disabilities.
