Life Story: Ms. Vouen Saem

Ms. Vouen Saem, the wife of a landmine survivor who lives with limited mobility and uses a wheelchair. They reside in Ek Phnom district, Battambang province.  Ms. Vouen Saem and her husband stepped up with strength and determination to create a better life for their family. With support from the project, our provincial focal point worked closely with her family to assess a suitable business idea that matched their abilities, knowledge, and the needs of their community. Together, they identified a grocery shop as a best option. Representing her husband, Ms. Voeun Saem became actively involved in the project by participating in life skills and refresher training sessions, which she later shared with her family.

Through these efforts, the grocery shop quickly grew into a family-run business. Her husband found a renewed sense of purpose, engaging with customers and contributing to daily operations.

The steady income from the shop improved their ability to meet daily needs, support their children’s education, and begin saving for the future. Seeing the potential for growth, Ms. Vouen Saem consulted with her family and decided to expand their business by selling evening soups to meet local demand. The added income made a significant difference, prompting her to further invest in raising chickens and pigs as another need, she identified in the community.

She proudly shared that the project’s grant of $258 has been used wisely, responding directly to local demand and community needs. This support transformed their lives, not only providing financial stability but also bringing renewed happiness and unity to the family.
